Green City Market is our Happy Place
Being a big baseball fan, the phrase “opening day” has always made me smile. It instantly conjures up images of summer, warmth, and friends. As well as hopefully a win or two on the field! Now that I am heading into my second outdoor season as executive director of the Green City Market, “opening day” has even more meaning to me.
I can hardly wait for tomorrow and the opening of outdoor season! All those wonderful tastes that I have missed over the long winter are back. The fresh asparagus, crunchy rhubarb, greens, that you can taste the goodness of the earth in each bite, I cannot wait. Shopping at a farmers market is an exploration. Each market there are new tastes waiting to be discovered. I love hearing the vendors talk about different products and their favorite ways to cook them, or how their family has been growing certain crops for generations.
Beyond the food, what makes me so excited for opening day is the community that forms around the market. I am anxious to be part of that community again. The mom and her daughters that come every Wednesday before school together, the dad that meets his grown children each week to walk the market and share a pastry, the farmers that I got to know so well last year, the buzz of walking around the market, it is all going to unfold again tomorrow. Last season, so many people generously shared their stories with me of why the market is their happy place. People talked about how they were bringing their kids up at Green City Market, they shared their favorite recipes, and talked about challenging times they were going through in their lives and how being at the market helped them through them. To me that is what makes Green City Market special, that feeling of belonging to a community.
I know my kids are looking forward to getting back outdoors, exploring the market and getting their hands dirty in the Edible Gardens. They are asking if their favorite vendors are coming back and have even offered to help us set up at 4:30am! Green City Market has become their happy place too. I look forward to seeing so many familiar faces back at the market and meeting so many new ones. Please stop by the info booth and say hello we are ready to welcome you and hope GCM becomes part of your summer ritual!
