The Green City Market Cookbook is a collection of recipes gathered from our community of customers, volunteers, farmers, and Chicago chefs.

Our mission is to inspire you to cook delicious seasonal food from your local farmers market and to share home cooked meals with family and friends. Market founder Abby Mandel always wanted a Green City Market Cookbook and now it's here!

Spread the word

“Abby, our market founder, was a firebrand when it came to how people thought of Midwest foods. And she found no more convincing an argument than a great recipe or a delicious plate of food. Which is exactly what you'll find here.”

—Rick Bayless, August 2013

More about the book

Who wrote it?

The Green City Market Cookbook is a collection of recipes gathered from our entire community of customers, volunteers, farmers and Chicago chefs. Each recipe was carefully selected by a team of culinary professionals and features the main crops of each season, and the story behind the recipe from each contributor. Recipes include:

  • Fingerling Potatoes & Garlicky Swiss Chard and Homemade Ricotta cheese
    from Peter Stasiulis, market customer
  • Grilled Fish Tacos with Tomatillo Salsa
from Rick Bayless, Co-Owner and Chef , Fronterra Grill, Topolobampo, Xoco
  • Goat Cheese-Stuffed Squash Blossoms
    from Alderman Michele Smith
  • Creamy Polenta Braised Greens and Mushrooms
from Tracey Vowell, Three Sisters Garden

These are just a few of our contributors. The culinary talent of The Green City community is what makes our book unique. It's like a giant recipe swap where professional chefs, customers, and farmers exchange their favorite things to cook with the best ingredients from each season.

Who took the photos?
Chris Cassidy Photography—one of the top food photographers in Chicago donated his time to bring our recipes to life. His team visited the market throughout the season taking photographs of all the ingredients before photographing the finished dish. It was a delicious endeavor and the photos will make your mouth water.
Who published it?
In keeping with our local and sustainable mission, it is important to us to work with local professionals to create our community book. Our publisher, Agate Publishing, publishes books from local and regional authors and is located in Evanston, Illinois. The paper in our book is recycled and the book is being printed in Michigan. We're keeping it all local.
