Power of Produce (POP) at Club Sprouts

8/19/2016

Sponsored by Chipotle Mexican Grill and awarded through the Farmers’ Market Coalition, the $2,000 POP Club grant award aims to teach children about nutritious foods and agricultural sustainability.

Green City Market is pleased to announce it has received a Power of Produce (POP) Club grant award from the Farmers’ Market Coalition, powered by Chipotle Mexican Grill. The Power of Produce (POP) Club grant award seeks to create farmers’ market-based children’s programs that teach children about the benefits of nutritious fruits and vegetables, local food systems and healthy food preparation through fun activities. POP Club will take place at Green City Market's Lincoln Park location on Wednesday, August 24, Saturday, August 27 and Wednesday August 31 and September 3. POP will also be at Green City Market's West Loop location on Saturday, September 3. During the market children of all ages will be able to participate in a series of fun activities ranging from food tastings to seed planting activities. POP Club kids will be encouraged to try new foods and buy fresh produce, all while learning about the benefits of healthy food options.

The POP Club is a win-win-win for our farmers, the POP Club kid consumers, and the surrounding local community. What makes POP unique is that it puts the buying power into the hands of children, giving children the opportunity to be the consumers. POP Club kids receive $5 vouchers to spend at Green City Market and make their own shopping decisions.

  • Farmers benefit from young POP consumers buying fresh produce directly from them at market. The voucher sales provide both new revenue and the potential for new, dedicated consumers. Farmers’ produce is featured as children try new foods each week though Two Bite. Further, weekly educational activities instruct children on the important role of farmers markets, farming, and reinforce the connection between the land and our food.
  • Young consumers are empowered to make healthy food choices on their own by having the direct buying power. Giving all children tokens to spend at Green City Markets gives them access to fresh produce each week. Through both the Two-Bite Club and weekly activities they get to try fresh, nutritious food that they might not have otherwise, slowly liking new, healthy food options that will be foundational to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
  • Communities benefit from the additional families the POP Club brings to market both through additional local sales and energy at the farmers market as well as benefits to surrounding local businesses. Having an energetic POP Club with dedicated families and young customers can be an important part of having a lively farmers market that encourage other customers to return to be a part of the vibrant public space (information via The Farmers Market Coalition
